Singapore, 2 January, 2014 – Singtel mio TV ushers in the Lunar New Year with the launch of its first original production for Jia Le Channel HD (Singtel mio TV Channel 502). Are You Hokkien?(你是福建人吗?) brings viewers a special insider look into everything Hokkien in Singapore.

“Over 40 percent of Singaporean Chinese are Hokkien, making it the largest dialect group. This series aims to help audiences rediscover what it means to be Hokkien, and find a deeper connection with their roots,” said Goh Seow Eng, Managing Director of TV, Singtel.

“Viewers from other cultures and dialect groups will also enjoy the content as Hokkien is very much part of Singapore’s local culture. Many of our everyday conversations are peppered with Hokkien words and phrases, and there’s so much more to this fascinating culture than Hokkien mee!”

The first episode will air on the eve of Lunar New Year (30 Jan) at 8.30pm with encore telecasts on the first day of Lunar New Year (31 Jan) at 10am, 2.30pm and 5pm. Episodes 2 to 8 will air every Saturday from 2 Feb at 10.30pm.

Something old, something new

Are You Hokkien? sees popular veteran host Marcus Chin and the vibrant Huang Jinglun travel all over Singapore to seek out all things Hokkien.  This includes observing wedding rites at a Hokkien family home, going behind the scenes with a Hokkien lion dance troupe and even venturing into a Hokkien cemetery.

Each light-hearted episode pits Marcus against Jing Lun in various situations that cover food, culture, language, history and customs. As the two gregarious hosts attempt the challenges at each stop, they uncover lost stories and fascinating anecdotes about Hokkien society.

“This is a very special time for us as Are You Hokkien? is the very first production tailored for Jia Le.  We believe it has great potential to engage and inform audiences of all ages with its rich local flavour in a meaningful and entertaining way,” said Mr. Goh.

The series is produced by Threesixzero Productions.
