Employee engagement in a YouTube era

The Leading CEO Award recognises Allen’s hands-on involvement in Singtel’s employee engagement initiatives.  This includes onsite visits and tea sessions with employees to get a pulse of issues that might affect their performance.  He also does regular in-house video interviews on hot topics affecting the company.

Attributing his win to a team effort, Allen said: “I am honoured to receive the Leading CEO award, but credit must be given to my colleagues in Singtel who have strived so hard over the years to make our company a dynamic organisation of committed, passionate and creative people.

“Employees today want inspiring and inclusive leaders. To win their loyalty, all people managers in Singtel are focused on leading through constant communication, creating a collaborative work environment and ensuring everyone is held accountable for their results.

“The Singapore HR Awards will spur all of us to continue to create challenging and exciting experiences for our employees.”

On Singtel’s Corporate HR Award win, Aileen Tan, Singtel’s Group Director (Human Resource), said: “We are delighted to be recognised by the industry for our efforts to engage and develop our employees.

“Our aim is to enable networking among colleagues within the Singtel Group to share ideas and work on joint-projects.  This reflects our key employee value proposition – Connect & Grow.”

The Learning & Human Capital Development Award reflects the effectiveness of Singtel’s training and development programmes. In these difficult times, skills upgrading and career development is especially important to ensure that employees remain relevant and productive.

The Talent Management, Retention & Succession Planning Award recognises Singtel’s experience-based, relationship-based and education-based development talent programmes.  These programmes are applicable in Singapore and across the Group.

Importance of communications in an economic slowdown

For its multi-pronged approach to reach out to its target audience, Singtel also won the HR Communications Award. Among its various communications channels are briefings, e-platforms, discussion forums/eforums and videos.

Aileen noted: “In the current economic slowdown, it is even more important to continue energising and engaging our employees so that they can contribute in helping the company ride out the tough times.

“Singtel aims to provide a supportive environment in which employees can build a fulfilling career as this is a key building block in our vision to be the best communications group in Asia Pacific.”

Singtel has 12,758 employees in Singapore as at 31 March 2009.

The Singapore HR Awards is conferred by the Singapore Human Resources Institute, the national professional body representing HR in Singapore. The Awards has been around since 1996 and is bestowed to companies and individuals who have significantly contributed to human capital development and being an Employer of Choice.
