Torm Shipping to implement Singtel solution for its entire fleet

Singapore, 19 November 2008 – Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel) today announced that it has won a multi-million dollar contract from Torm Shipping, Europe’s leading maritime company, to implement Singtel’s Global Maritime Very Small Aperture Terminal (GMVSAT) service for its fleet of 100 ships.

Singtel’s GMVSAT service provides Torm Shipping with a maritime broadband solution with seamless, worldwide coverage over all major shipping routes.   Equipped with advanced auto-beam switching capability, the service will help the Danish company to save valuable time and resources by allowing its vessels to move from one ocean region to another without the need for time-consuming re-configurations of satellite communications equipment.

The solution provides secure ‘always-on’ unlimited broadband connectivity.   This allows Torm Shipping to extend office applications such as email, Intranet and Internet access and voice communications to their employees at sea more cost-effectively than traditional pay-as-you-use services.

The company will enjoy enhanced ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore voice communications with the use of state-of-the-art Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) phones installed on each vessel.   These devices offer the functionality and user-friendly features of business phones.

Singtel’s GMVSAT core infrastructure is managed over its awarding-winning ConnectPlus Internet Protocol Virtual Private Network (IP VPN), providing Torm Shipping with the highest level of security for the network monitoring and performance management of its GMVSAT systems.

Mr Claus Usen Jensen, Torm Shipping’s Executive Vice President, Technical Division, said: “VSAT opens the doors for the future.   We can now ensure better communication between vessel and office, but not least between vessel and home.  We now have to think in new work routines both in the office and onboard.”

Mr Bill Chang, Singtel’s Executive Vice President of Business, said: “Singtel’s GMVSAT solution will enable Torm Shipping to reduce costs and boost business productivity by enabling its ships to become seamless extensions of the shore-based office.   It will also improve crew welfare by allowing seafarers to undertake online distance training and stay in touch with loved ones while at sea.

“This multi-million dollar contract demonstrates Torm Shipping’s confidence in Singtel to deliver world-class Infocomm Technology (ICT) solutions.   We are excited to be a partner in helping them achieve their goals.”

Maritime customers can also choose to enjoy secure connectivity to their offices on land via Singtel’s ConnectPlus IP VPN, which provides extensive coverage in over 80 destinations worldwide.   This provides peace of mind knowing that sensitive shipboard information and data applications will be safe from the threat of hackers and terrorists.
