Singapore, 16 May 2008 -- Singapore Telecommunications Limited (Singtel) announced today it has won the prestigious Seatrade Asia Award for Technical Innovation. Singtel won this award for developing the world’s first 1.5m C-Band stabilised satellite antenna, together with its partner SeaTel. The antenna allows sea-going vessels to enjoy significantly higher bandwidth than a traditional 2.4-metre C-band antenna at a lower cost, with an option for dedicated bandwidth.
Mr Titus Yong, Singtel’s Vice President of Satellite, said: “This breakthrough caters to the increasing demand for ‘always-on’ broadband solutions such as email, Internet access, e-Surveillance, GSM coverage and Voice-over-IP calls, which help maritime customers improve productivity and enhance crew welfare.
With its compact size, the antenna makes these services more accessible to smaller vessels.”
The Singtel 1.5m C-band stabilised antenna is designed to work seamlessly with Singtel’s satellites and ground infrastructure, providing customers with superior connectivity.
It has been successfully implemented on more than 18 vessels since its launch.
The independent judging panel for the award includes highly respected industry experts such as Mr Peter Cremers, Chairman of the Hong Kong Shipowners Association (HKSA) and CEO, Anglo Eastern Group, as well as Mr S. S. Teo, Chairman of the Singapore Maritime Foundation and President of the Singapore Shipping Association.
The judging criteria included originality, level of innovation and the ability to improve the efficiency of maritime operations.
Other companies competing in the same category are PSA Corporation and Yantai Raffles Shipyard.
