Event dedicated to the late Mr S R Nathan, and funds raised to help children and youth with special needs realise their dreams
SINGAPORE, 29 August 2016 – In support of the 15th anniversary of the Singtel Touching Lives Fund (STLF), 68 of Singtel’s business partners and associates from around the region teed off at Tanah Merah Golf Course today at its marquee event – the Singtel Charity Golf. A total of $1 million was raised for children and youth with special needs from STLF’s beneficiaries.
The annual event was also dedicated to the memory of the late Mr S R Nathan, a patron of charities who started the President’s Challenge in 2000 to rally Singaporeans around support for the vulnerable in our community. As a mark of respect, participants observed a minute of silence during the event.
Mr Yuen Kuan Moon, Chairman of the STLF and CEO Consumer Singapore at Singtel, said: “We’ve come a long way in our support for children and youth with special needs, and I’m very grateful for the strong support we’ve had for Singtel Charity Golf over the past 15 years. The amount raised today will add to the $33 million we’ve raised since STLF was conceived, and go towards programmes that help these children realise their full potential and lead independent lives.”
“This year, we would like to remember the late Mr S R Nathan, Singapore’s former President, as the nation also lost a patron of charities. We believe his spirit will continue to live on as we continue to make a difference to the vulnerable and needy in our community”, he added.
The golf event was also a platform for STLF beneficiaries to interact with their sponsors. This year, nine students from APSN Tanglin School were engaged as waiters during the after-game dinner, in a unique opportunity for them to put their skills to practice. The 16-year-old final year students, who are part of the Event Management Club in the school, served drinks as well as dinner to guests.
Another group of students from APSN Tanglin School also performed a Latin dance as part of dinner entertainment. In appreciation of the guests’ support for STLF, 250 terrariums were painstakingly crafted by the students as a ‘thank you’ gift to the sponsors.
Mrs Liza Ow, Principal of APSN Tanglin School, said: “Through the Singtel Touching Lives Fund, Singtel has been a long-time supporter of APSN Tanglin School, and we’re always working together to explore ways to develop our students holistically. Today’s event provides a wonderful opportunity for them to showcase their abilities and enjoy a sense of acceptance as integral members of society. We hope the guests like the terrariums that were handcrafted by our students, which are tokens of appreciation for their support.”
In addition to the annual charity golf event, Singtel also runs a year-round in-house donation drive, where contributions from employees are matched dollar-for-dollar by the company. This year, in celebration of the Singtel Touching Lives Fund’s 15th anniversary, Singtel will match two times the amount for every dollar contributed to the fund, which goes directly to Singtel’s beneficiaries, as the company bears all fundraising costs.
Beneficiaries adopted by the Singtel Touching Lives Fund include APSN Chaoyang School, APSN Tanglin School, Cerebral Palsy Alliance Singapore School, Eden School and MINDS Lee Kong Chian Gardens School.
