Cristene Chang Hoei | 张慧 (b. 1942, Indonesia) is a contemporary printmaker and mixed media painter. Chang’s abstract oeuvre is created from a combination of printmaking and painting, producing unique hand-pulled monoprints. Chang is influenced by literary texts and uses the metaphors of weaving and threads to indicate time, memory and reconstructions.

Chang studied for a Diploma in Art Education at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1985), simultaneously learning Chinese brush painting under pioneer finger painter Wu Tsai Yen (1982 to 1983). She also holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in printmaking from Middlesex University London (1996).

Chang’s accolades include the First Prize at the 1996 Ray Fawcett Memorial Award, London, the First Prize (Abstract) and the Distinction Prize (Abstract), Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award from the Singapore Art Society (2003 and 2010 respectively) as well as the Bronze Award at the 2014 UOB Painting of the Year. Chang was a finalist at the UOB Painting of the Year (1984 and 1988), the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (2003), the 2009 Sovereign Asian Art Prize, Hong Kong and most recently, at the 6th Guanlan International Print Biennial (2017, China).

Chang has exhibited widely in Southeast Asia, Macau, Japan, Australia, Europe and Canada. Group exhibitions in Singapore include the National Day Art Exhibition (1983) and the National Museum Centenary Exhibition (1987) at the National Museum Art Gallery, Our Impressions and Expressions (1997) and Women Artists in Singapore (2011) at the Singapore Art Museum, Art of the Second Generation at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (2005) and the exhibitions of the Modern Art Society Singapore in 2014 and 2016.

Chang’s works are in the collections of Singtel, the Singapore Art Museum, Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and some government agencies.
