Fan Shao Hua | 范少华 (b. 1963, Guangzhou, China) paints in both realistic and abstract styles, using oil, watercolour and Chinese ink. He is known for his portraits, lotuses and cityscapes depicting modern city life.

Fan first studied Chinese ink painting at 10 years old, and Western art at the Training Centre of Fine Arts for Children in Guangzhou (1975 to 1978). He graduated from the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in 1985 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, specialising in oil painting. He completed a Master of Arts degree at the RMIT University, Australia, followed by a Research Doctorate in Fine Arts at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

Fan has been recognised with local and international awards for his work. These include the 1997 Singapore Telecom’s Expressions in Art contest, Distinction (Chinese Ink Painting, 1998) for the Dr Tan Tsze Chor Art Award by the Singapore Art Society, the Winsor & Newton Worldwide Millennium Painting Competition (1999), UOB Painting of the Year (2000), the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards (2001) and the International Culture Art Fair Award from the Cultural Association of Korea (2007).

Fan’s solo exhibitions include Essence: Life I at the Guangdong Museum of Art (2007, Guangzhou), Essence: Life II at the Shanghai Art Museum (2010, Shanghai), Fan Shaohua Painting Exhibition at the National Art Museum of China (2010, Beijing), Essence: Life at the Japan Modern Art Society (2013, Osaka) and Journey in Art: A Retrospective Exhibition by Fan Shaohua at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (2015). His group exhibitions include Fan Shaohua, Chng Seok Tin and Chua Ai Hua Art Exhibition at Cité Internationale des Arts (2004, Paris) and the International Art Exhibition (2009, Seoul).

Fan’s works have been collected by Singtel and other public and private corporations.
