Tee Kai Yin (b. 1973, Singapore) is one of Singapore's rising stars in the visual arts. A recent graduate of Singapore's Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1993), Tee has participated each year since 1993 in major local art competitions. In 1991, Tee was declared the Most Promising Young Artist at the 10th United Overseas Bank Painting of the Year Competition. In 1996, the Philip Morris ASEAN Art Awards awarded Tee the Juror's Choice award. For his participation in Singapore Telecom Expressions in Art Competition in 1997, Tee was awarded Best Artist.
Tee's works reflect on the underlying instabilty, frailty and blunders of modern society. Working with a predominantly monochromatic palette of colours, Tee expresses his concerns with an honest energetic flow of lines, reminiscent of art made by children or graffiti.
His build-up of gestural lines and marks result in a profound sense of depth and space. Foreground and background push and pull at each other, while yet reminding the viewer of the realities of the flat surface.
