Abstract

Lew Bee Kuan's An Apparatus in Autumn follows the style of abstract expressionist painting. Using cryptic scribbles and marks on the painting surface, Lew's piece may be inspired by the contemporary American artist Cy Twombly. In Lew's painting, the building outlines appear fragmented. The expression of being in disjoint continues in the random use of lines and placement of falling autumn leaves. Lew has limited her colour palette to only three primary colours, as well as white and black.

This painting won the first prize in the Singapore Telecom's Expressions in Art series in 1995. Other abstract paintings in the Singtel collection include works by Chen KeZhan, Goh Beng Kwan, Leo Hee Tong, Lester Lee, Poh Siew Wah, Tan Swie Hian and Thomas Yeo.
