Abstract

Chen KeZhan’s art is said to straddle both western and Chinese painting. Chen paints with Chinese ink and pigments on paper to produce semi-abstract, emotive expressions of natural phenomena. His works evoke a sense of beauty, with the use of colour and multiple textured brushstrokes.

The Autumn series is one of many of Chen’s compositions on the seasons. The amber tones are made by very wet applications of pigment, over which the dry brush work of black, blue and yellow are painted. The works appear timeless, works done in 2000 being similar stylistically to later pieces.

Several of Chen’s works are in the Singtel collection, including the Garden series (2005), Heliconias (2004), and two pairs of Autumn series works (2011).
