Abstract

Leo Hee Tong’s works are often composed from images of local scenes. Following in the tradition of the Nanyang style of composition, Leo appropriated subjects from his Singapore Chinese culture for his paintings. He tried to ‘modernise’ the treatment of the painted surface with the use of textured mixed media. Leo was a proponent of the semi-abstract painting which was popular with many artists in the 1980s and 1990s.

Similarly, Moonlight is a semi-abstract landscape. The moonlit evening sky and the figures of a man and a woman are discernible through the diffused brushwork. The fragmented surface treatment is designed to be decorative rather than to present a modernist worldview.

Other paintings by Leo Hee Tong in the Singtel collection are Crimson Celebrations (1991), New Year Celebrations (1990) and Twinkle Night (2010).
