This later work by Goh Beng Kwan is a departure from the artist’s earlier collage paintings. Made with coloured pulp and paint laid on canvas, the composition comprises bodies of bright colour floated in a white suspension. The coloured pulp appears to be laid at random, although there are several layers of paint and pulp creating depth and playfulness to the whole composition. 

The painting marks a change for the artist, moving from the style he had developed over forty years. Goh’s work often uses scrap paper and at times, objects, which he incorporates into the surface of his artwork. Two other paintings in the Singtel collection Terrace Cultivation and New Era, both dated 2001, follow Goh’s well-known style of building horizontal colour layers in the central area of the canvas. The artist often uses red, orange and ochre accents for interest and depth.
