Fan Shao Hua (b. 1963) paints in both realistic and abstract styles. This painting depicts the harmony between three women of different ethnic backgrounds under a red umbrella. Obviously of a symbolic nature, the colourful composition uses various cultural elements in the women's dress and hair to communicate the concept of friendship and tolerance between people with different backgrounds. Fan presents a metaphor for the acceptance and tolerance of difference in Singapore, his adoptive country. After graduating from Guangzhou Fine Arts Academy, Fan did his Master of Arts degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Australia, followed by a Research Doctorate in Fine Art at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. 

The painting was a winner of the Singapore Telecoms Expression in Art competition in 1997.
