This city view of Shanghai by Ang Ah Tee is painted in impressionistic style. Yellow and ochre hues dominate, perhaps influenced by the time of year. The wide tree-lined boulevard busy with traffic and people is dominated by historical beaux-arts buildings and is one of the grand views of Shanghai. Typical of Ang's painting technique, accents of red draw the viewer's eye across the canvas, picking up the details that the artist would like to highlight for his viewer.
From his travels, Ang has painted many grand and picturesque vistas of world cities including Shanghai, Venice, and Paris. More recently, he has concentrated on more exotic village scenes in Nepal and Suzhou. Another work in the Singtel collection that may be compared with this painting is Port View (1992), painted in watercolour and acrylic.
