Ong Chye Cho was a long-time member of the Sunday group, an informal gathering of painters that comprised mostly watercolourists. As such he became well known for his watercolours of the Singapore river and local street scenes, painted en plein air when the group met for their weekly sessions. However, another favourite subject of Ong's were roses, which he could paint indoors. Ong was from a generation of artists that celebrated beauty, and he considered the rose its timeless symbol. In this 1984 rendition, the roses are featured close-up, focusing on the form of the petals and different shades of reds and pinks. The effect is a pretty, soft-focused and impressionistic piece.
