Soh Siew Kiat was well-known in the 1990s as a young artist who loved nature and painted many floral works in watercolour. Her watercolours were detailed studies of local flowers including many orchid hybrids like the Vanda Miss Joaquim. These ebullient works were popular as well as being winners of several awards for the artist. This painting Vanda displays Soh's skill in handling watercolour, which is a medium that does not tolerate mistakes. Composed as a meticulous study of the orchids as they are grown, each stalk is delicately drawn and coloured. The effect of her sensitive attention to colour is a vivid and attractive rendition of the orchids.

Soh Siew Kiat trained at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1982-84) and went on to Master of Fine Arts (1991-92) at the University of Central England, Birmingham, United Kingdom. This painting Vandas was acquired from the National Kidney Foundation Charity Art Exhibition in 1992.
